INSIGHT POLICING
Insights generate understanding.
Insight Policing is based on the premise that when officers are able to understand the people they are engaging with, they position themselves to appropriately, effectively and legitimately enforce the law and keep the pubic safe.

Insight Policing is a practical, applied tool used for gaining understanding in difficult moments of enforcement. It is a strategic, conflict-resolution based, communication skill-set designed to help officers prevent escalation, get to the root of challenging interactions quickly, and devise targeted solutions that encourage compliance and build trust-- an asset for officers in all areas of enforcement who handle challenging situations everyday.
Insight Policing is built on the theory and science of how we think and make decisions in conflict. It offers officers sound, practical, and effective communication skills that integrate easily into their law enforcement and problem solving capabilities to help them do their jobs safely and effectively.

- 90% of officers trained in Insight Policing agree that Insight Policing enhances their ability to defuse the feelings of threat citizens have about their encounters with police officers.
How does Insight Policing work?
Insight Policing expands the information that officers pay attention to to include conflict behavior--those fight, flight, freeze things we do to defend against threat. When citizens feel threatened in an interaction with an officer, they may resist, become uncooperative, or even aggressive. Officers can notice that while these behaviors are often violations of the law, they also signify a feeling of threat and a decision to defend on the part of the citizen. When officers can become skillfully curious about the threat and the decision to defend, they can reduce the threat, calm the citizen down, and encourage a productive interaction that does not escalate.
On the same token, Insight Policing helps officers identify in themselves when they are gripped by threat in a citizen encounter. When they do, they become self-aware in stressful moments, reengaging their critical thinking and positioning them to use their training to make good decisions, rather than reactive ones. This reduces escalated encounters, preventable arrests and excessive use-of-force while increasing trust and legitimacy.

Insight Policing helps me delve a little bit deeper. When we can find out why, ask the right question at the right time, it makes a big difference.” –Montclair Officer
“It helps you to make a different determination versus just immediately arresting somebody. You can help them find alternative ways to solve whatever problem they have.”
–Memphis Officer
“The training showed us how to understand people. That there’s underlying problems and, once people see that you are trying to resolve their problem, and that you really care, or you’re showing that you’re caring, they open up to you and give you the information… Before I would just assume why, or probably, you know, I probably wouldn’t have cared why.”
—Memphis Officer
